The Rule of 90 to 10 percent that Affects Your Whole Life

The 90/10 Rule.

The 90/10 Rule is one of the most helpful concepts for life and time management. According to this principle: 10 percent of your activities will account for 90 percent of your results. This can change the way you set goals forever! (this post is by Jeff Hunter)

90/10 Rule In Action

If you have a list of ten items to accomplish, only one of those items will turn out to be worth more than the other nine items put together.

If you have a list of ten items to accomplish, only one of those items will turn out to be worth more than the other nine items put together.

The sad fact is that most people procrastinate on the top 10 percent of items. However, these are the most valuable and important – the “vital few”.  Instead, they busy themselves with the least important 90 percent, the “trivial many,” which contribute very little to their success.

Delegate, Automate, or Stop Doing it

How To Apply The 90/10 Rule

Here’s what you should do in order to effectively apply the 90/10 rule to goal setting and to your overall productivity.

First, take a piece of paper and write down ten goals. Then ask yourself: If you could only accomplish one of the goals on that list today, which one goal would have the greatest positive impact on your life?

After completing this exercise, your choice will determine the most important goal. Achieving this goal will help you much more than any of the other goals on your list combined.  Ensure that you continue to work at the goal which you’ve chosen as the most valuable all the time.

This does NOT mean the other 90% of your work goes away, but you must make three choices for the other 90%:

A) Delegate it
B) Automate it
C) Stop doing it

Accomplish The Biggest Task First

Often, you may see people who appear to be busy all day long but seem to accomplish very little. This is almost always the case as they are busy working on tasks that are of low value. On the other hand, they are procrastinating on the one activity that could make a real difference to their companies and to their careers.

The most valuable task you can do each day is often the hardest and most complex. The payoff and rewards will make completing them truly worth it.

Before you begin work, always ask yourself, “Is this task in the top 10 percent of my activities or in the bottom 90 percent?”

The rule to adhere to here is: resist the temptation to clear up small things first!

Choosing to start your day working on low-value tasks, will cause you to soon develop the habit of always starting and working on low-value tasks.

Always Work Towards Your Main Goal

Always Work Towards Your Main Goal

Finally, let’s discuss this study that has just been done about the attitudes of rich people versus poor people in regard to goal setting. The study found that 85% of rich people have one big goal that they work on all the time.

Therefore, if you want to be wealthy, perhaps you should do what wealthy people do. Pick one big goal and work on it all the time. If you do, it will change your life.

Before we wrap up, I’d like to leave you with a thought to share with your friends and followers:

Your income right now is a result of your standards, it is not the industry, it is not the economy.” – Tony Robbins

Those are my strategies for applying the 90/10 Rule to goal setting.

My questions today are: “Have you used the 90/10 Rule for goal setting? If you have, what changes have you noticed in your life?”

How To Use 9010 Lifestyle To Achieve Success

Dreaming big dreams has always been the starting point of great success. Nothing works faster than for you to cast off your own limitations. Begin dreaming and fantasizing about the wonderful things that you can become, have, and do. Nothing is more important, and nothing works faster.

William Shakespeare wrote, “Do not be like the cat who wanted a fish but was afraid to get his paws wet.” You must be willing to take the necessary steps to achieve your goals. When you make attempts and attain the success within reach, your levels of self-esteem and self-confidence will go up immediately. You will feel empowered about yourself and your ability to deal with what happens to you. The reason why so many people accomplish so little is because they never allow themselves to take action and achieve the kind of life that is possible for them.

Theory Of Constraints

As outlined by Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox in their  “Theory of Constraints” –  is a set of tools to achieve positive change agents which can be used to manage constraints, thereby increasing profits. Thus making it possible to use this powerful principle to dream big dreams and live without limits. This is one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern thinking.

Goldratt found that in every process when seeking to accomplish any goal, there is a bottleneck or choke cord that serves as a constraint on the process. This constraint seeks to set the speed at which you achieve any particular goal. If you concentrate all of your creative energies and attention on alleviating the constraint, you can speed up the process faster than by doing any other single thing.

Allow me to illustrate using an example. Well, this is actually a true story. Imagine this! I was a very successful Project Manager for an AMAZING company. I was working 10-12 hours a day average. I was SLAVING my butt off for years and years. And I wasn’t seeing the progress of my hard work and dedication as I was doing everything in my business myself.

After working 10 – 12 hours a day for the years which ran by, I’d be exhausted. Needless to say, I was also watching my family fall apart. My stress levels were off the charts but I felt trapped. I needed my job to provide for the needs and well-being of my family but the time I was spending at my job made the home situation worse. I wanted to give up!

BUT THANK GOODNESS I DIDN’T GIVE UP!!!

My utilization of the 90/10 lifestyle has afforded me with the drive to dream big and succeed. I quit my job at that amazing company and went into business for myself. I knew that I had a great skill and was certain that after so many years of polishing my craft that I could competently handle my own business.

9010 Rule In Action

The 90/10 Rule In Action

My “Virtual Assistants” do over 90% of my work for me. No crap! No BS! No making stuff up! I literally figured out how to delegate 90% of what I did to virtual assistants and freelancers around the world. Don’t think for a minute that achieving this was an overnight achievement. There were many times I fell along the way. I went through hell out there, to get to where I am today!

I successfully launched my own business SOLELY POWERED by a 100% virtual team.

This is not an attempt at self-praise nor conceit. I’ve been humbled by the journey it took to get me here and I feel somewhat scornful when people treat me like a hero when I go to conferences now. I’m just a normal person who created a foolproof system to delegate effectively, and build an incredible virtual team!

What Are Your Constraints?

Constraints refer to the things, whether real or imagined which prevent you from achieving your goals. Therefore it is important that you identify the factors holding you back? Is it your level of education or skill? Is it your current occupation or job? Is it your current environment or level of health? Is it the situations that you are in today? What sets the pace for you achieving your goal?

Bearing in mind that learning should never stop, you can unlearn the things which debilitate your progress. It is possible to get yourself out of the situations which you have gotten yourself into, but you must be willing to identify the constraints which prevent you from seeing the silver-lining which accompany the clouds.

Time management best strategies

Ben Franklin said it first:  “Time Is Money”

One of the biggest things that holds people back from making money online is poor time management skills.  After all, the internet is a seductive place, and you can sit down at your desk with the intention of working for 3 hours, only to get sucked into one of your favorite forums or looking at “cute cute kitty videos” or something. (thanks for this blog post to Stan Stuchinsky)

Unfortunately, if you don’t have the ability to manage your time wisely, chances are you’ll never be productive online (which means, of course, no making big money, quitting your job, or working full-time in your underwear).

Time management is one skill you absolutely MUST master to be successful.

If you’ve tried to get your time under control before and failed, or if you’re just looking to get a head start on a productive lifestyle, then you’ll find some helpful tips below.  (Just don’t spend too much time memorizing them…you’ve got work to do.  LOL!)

Make A List

Establish a “quitting time” – a hard, fast, carved-in-stone quitting time after which you PROMISE yourself you’re not gonna go back online for ANY reason related to work.

Let’s say that you establish that time as 3:00 PM.  About fifteen minutes before that time sit down in front of a pen and a yellow legal pad and make a numbered list of all the things you want to accomplish for the NEXT day.  And never, EVER tell yourself, “Oh, yeah, I’ll remember to do THAT tomorrow;  I don’t have to put it on my list.”  Those are precisely the kinds of things you DO want on a written list because those are the things that are SO common sense that you either keep putting them off or you simply forget about ’em.

Be sure to put that yellow legal pad in a convenient place – out of the way, but in a conspicuous place – beside your computer.  Making a “To-Do” list on a word file that you can file in cyberspace is merely an exercise in self-deception;  unless you put that list in an OBVIOUS place where you’re going to mentally “trip” over it all day long, you’re wasting your time.

And take-your-time!  Since this list is your Life’s Game-Plan for the next day, don’t just itemize what you MUST do;  think about what you SHOULD do, what you COULD do, and what you’d LIKE to do.

Finally – and probably most importantly – cross off each item (even the minor ones) as you accomplish them.  This is key to the whole process because it gives one a subconscious feeling of accomplishment.

“Managing your time without setting priorities is like shooting randomly and calling whatever you hit the target.”

The “Wurst Furst” Strategy

One of the failings we ALL share is the inborn need to put off unpleasant tasks as long as possible.  In other words we have  that all-too-human habit of…..

…..PROCRASTINATING!

But there is a simple fix for this;  When you’re making out that To Do list at the end of the day, pick out that ONE task that is most distasteful – that one task that you’d rather walk over hot coals than perform – that one task that makes your blood run cold!

Now, the all-too-human method of handling this item is to put it off as long as possible, maybe even until it moves from being a mere annoyance to a major problem or catastrophe.  But WE’RE gonna approach this just a little differently;  you and I are going to do this “WORST, FIRST.”  We are going to conquer that most repulsive task of all BEFORE ANY OTHER ITEM ON OUR LIST!

You will find that when you consistently do the worst-first that you will be able to approach those OTHER tasks on your list with a relief and focus that would have been impossible if you had left that distasteful task weigh on your mind all day long.

Obey “Posted Limits ” – It’s Important to Know When to Start, But It’s MORE Important to Know When to S-T-O-P!

There are a lot of theories out there about how best to budget your time.  The most popular is the “80/20 rule,” which states that since 80% of your business comes from 20% of your activities, you should then focus 80% of your time on those activities.

Sounds great, right?  Unfortunately, it’s really hard to stick to, and you’ll most likely find yourself going over budget on other things.  And since any plan that’s hard to implement is essentially worthless, you need to find another tactic.

A great way to do this is to assign time limits to each activity, and hold yourself to them.  If you give yourself 30 minutes to respond to emails, once that timer goes off, you’re done.  No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

This will keep you on track with your day, and even better, having that sword hanging over your head really helps you focus on the task at hand. Chances are you’ll respond to more emails if you limit yourself to 30 minutes than you would if you gave yourself an entire afternoon.

Break It Down – “It’s Hard By the Yard, But a Cinch By the Inch”

In my opinion that old Nike marketing quote – “Just DO It!” – is the most crucial in the study of time management.

People fool themselves all the time into thinking that things are more important than they really are. Should that key word in your sentence be bolded or italicized?  Better think about it…and next thing you know you’ve wasted a bunch of time on something that’s likely inconsequential.

A far better strategy is to learn how to make decisions quickly.  In the above example, just go with whatever your gut tells you, or even whichever’s easier.  You can always go back and test to see if one truly is better than the other.  Chances are, though, you’ll find most decisions are relatively meaningless, and so just picking one at random is preferable to wasting time debating their merits.

I’m not saying make major decisions on the spur of the moment, without thought or planning.  But how many major decisions do you really make in a day?  I bet not many. There might be a lot that feel that way, but once you learn to just treat them like any other question, you’ll find that the decisions come easier…and that you get a lot more done each day.

The Wassell Strategy – “Done” Is Better Than “Perfect”

One of my worst traits is that I am a perfectionist!

The sad part about it is that I know it’s a bad habit, a terrible habit, in fact.  For example, I know fellow marketers who can sit down and write a well-crafted, effective sales letter in 10 or 15 minutes.  But me?  I might labor over a promotional message for hours.  It’s not unusual for me to use a thesaurus to analyze if one word is more descriptive, more powerful, more “potent” than another word in delivering my message.

Then one day a good friend of mine (by the name of John Wassell) pointed out the “error of my ways.”

In so many words he admonished me thus:  “Understand, Stan, that there’s certainly nothing wrong with wanting to do a good job, a GREAT job even:  the pursuit of excellenceis gratifying and healthy.  But the pursuit of perfection is frustrating, neurotic, and a terrible waste of time.”

To this day, like a recovering alcoholic or drug addict, I still struggle to overcome MY “addiction” whenever I start another project, no matter how large or small.  But in the final analysis, I have found that it IS far better to be “done than perfect”;  the end results are the same, but now…..

…..I have much more time to look at cute kitty videos on the Internet!

People enjoy online success because they follow 6 key tips.

6 Key Reasons People Enjoy Success Online And Avoid Failure

6 Key Reasons People Enjoy Success Online And Avoid Failure

Success online is an elusive goal for most people.

Sadly in the online marketing area 90% of people who look for a way to make money online fail.  It is a fact of life, but you do not want to be part of the 90%. You want to be part of the 10% who succeed. (see Why Are So Many Internet Startups Failing Today)

Most articles approach this statistic from a negative angle. Why businesses fail.

I wanted to take a more positive slant and focus on turning those negatives into positives.

Here’s a quote to get us started:

“Losers quit when they fail. Winners fail until they succeed.

Robert Kiyosaki

1 People Enjoy Success Online: Don’t Go for the Get Rich  Quick Schemes

Dreaming of Getting RichSuccessful people understand that it takes work, effort, and investment of time and money to get a good return on that investment.

If it looks to good to be true then it probably is.

I know you’ve seen those websites with the big house, fancy cars and a yacht moored at some glamorous location promising you it’s all done for you. All you have to do is join. Instant success.

Believe me when I tell you they don’t work. I learned the hard way.

If you want success, you need to go with programs that have proven themselves over the long term.  Earning an income online takes time and lots of hard work. It isn’t fast or easy, so don’t believe anyone who tells you that it is.

We want to appeal to everyone and get rich quick. We want to be millionaires. I’ve got this plan to buy Tasmania you see.

Angus Young

2  People Enjoy Success Online Because They Are Prepared to Invest Time and Money

Invest in Yourself

To run an online business or make money online, there are tools that you need and they are not all free.

You will need a means to capture your an email list of prospects.  This is called an autoresponder. You also need to have a domain name and website hosting.

Successful people understand the need to invest in the right tools to help them succeed.

But many people bring a “free” mentality to online business that they would never think to take to bricks and mortar business.

For some reason, many people believe they can create a business online for little or no investment.

Perhaps it’s all those get rich quick schemes.

When you layout real money for products and services you will work harder to get a return. Whereas, if you haven’t invested anything…what’s to lose if you don’t put any work into it?

If you have limited resource, find someone to work with and set up a monthly budget for your business.

“Most people try to get rich by being cheap.”

Robert Kiyosaki

3 People Enjoy Success Online Because they Do Their Reseach.

research shockMake sure that any program you want to join or promote has a good product behind it.

Test it out.

Find out how long has the program been running. Who is the owner? If there is no mention of the owner’s name then be careful.  You want a program from someone you can trust.

Check out online reviews. Ask other people who are using the program how they like it.

Do your due diligence. Don’t jump before you look.

Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.

Warren Buffett

4 People Enjoy Success Online Because they Don’t Quit

Don't QuitBuilding a business online takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight. But for people who haven’t invested, they don’t have much in the game. Therefore, when things get a little tough they walk away in disgust and say it doesn’t work.

Successful people do the opposite.

Persistence, patience, and perseverance: those are the words successful people understand.

“No, I don’t ever give up. I’d have to be dead or completely incapacitated.”

Elon Musk

What will keep you going in the face of adversity?

A no-quit attitude is a must.

5 People Enjoy Success Online Because They Understand the Need to Build an Email List

Building and Email ListIf you are going to be successful online you need to have an email newsletter list.  It is that simple.

Truly the money is in the list.

Your list allows you to stay in touch with those who are interested in what you have to offer.

However, you don’t just send your list emails trying to get them to buy from you.

You need to give value to your list and build relationships by sharing good content with them.  The best content is what will help them solve their biggest problems or accomplish their most important goals.  When you have a relationship, you will be able to send them recommendations, and they will see you as a trusted adviser and want to buy from you.

“If you’re not building an email list, you are an idiot. I know that’s harsh, but when companies can destroy your business in one fell swoop you should rely on things you can control.”

Derek Halpern

6 People Enjoy Success Online Because They Take Action

ActionThis seems like a very simple idea. All the previous steps are about taking action.

Things can sound really great in theory but until you take action nothing happens.

A large number of people believe that they personally don’t have to take action, just others around them need to do that.

Many of the programs and online business plans are designed to appeal to people who don’t want to take action.

An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.

Arnold Glasow

The best way to increase your chances of being in the 10% who experience success online is by following what successful people do as I’ve outlined here.

Do you have a set budget you use to invest in yourself?

One thing that I am using that is bringing me results and builds my email list is Funnel-X Project. This funnel is set up to help me earn from four different income streams at one time.  It builds your list first then has video directions in it to help people to set it up.  It also makes sales for you with a video sales presentation built in.  This system is currently making sales for me daily.  You have nothing to lose give it a try today.  The funnel itself is worth serious money. 7 Things Great Leaders Never Say

glowing bulb among the gray

As a leader, your words are powerful. Make sure you’re using them in the right way.

“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.”  —Rudyard Kipling

As a leader, motivating and inspiring people is one of your most important tasks, and the words you say (and how you say them) are your most powerful tool. And if you strive to be a greatleader, there are things you should never say.

Here are seven statements to take out of our vocabulary completely:

1. “There are no problems, only opportunities.”

Yes, problems do come up, and denying them doesn’t make them go away. Although the phrase is often used to encourage team members to think more creatively, it can also communicate that the leader isn’t willing to listen when there are real challenges to overcome. It makes the leader look out of touch and weak.

The fix: Always be willing to listen to your employees, and ensure they know it. The result will be employees who are much more willing to tackle challenges and bring you solutions.

2. “Don’t do anything without asking me first.”

Unless someone is new to a job, micromanaging their every step not only hinders their growth, but is just as unproductive for the leader. When leaders micromanage everything, they bottleneck the process and lower employee morale. Employees are productive when they have meaningful work and the resources and authority to do their job.

The fix: Instead of micromanaging, clarify expectations ahead of time, check on employees appropriate to their training and ability, and follow up with feedback on how they are doing. The goal is to put the right people in the right places and enable them to succeed.

3. “Don’t bring me any bad news.”

Telling employees this doesn’t make the bad news go away, but it can keep a leader from finding out about it in time for it to be managed. Colin Powell, former U.S. secretary of state said, “Bad news isn’t wine. It doesn’t improve with age.” It’s always better to tackle a problem when it’s small than wait until it’s costly or causes bad publicity.

The fix: Create an environment where employees are encouraged to bring up issues when they appear so they can be solved.

4. “It’s not personal, it’s business.”

Business is all about relationships, and relationships are personal. Employees spend the majority of their waking hours at work. Leaders who ignore their feelings will create resentment and have a difficult time carrying out their goals.

The fix: Create a culture where employees know you have a passion for your work, but empathy for people. Demonstrate that you respect them by treating them the way they want to be treated.

5. “We don’t need any more ideas.”

Leaders often reject creative ideas not because those ideas don’t have potential, but because they aren’t capable of handling the fear, uncertainty and anxiety that goes with backing an idea that may be innovative but has potential risk, such as loss or negative judgment from their boss. After all, if the leader backs an unproven idea and the idea goes down in flames, they believe they do, too. The unintended result is that an organization doesn’t thrive and progress without an influx of innovative (and sometimes edgy) ideas.

The fix: Open yourself up to new ideas and ways of thinking. Take employees’ ideas seriously, and get an unbiased person you trust to evaluate how a new idea could be implemented with changes in strategy or process.

6. “I don’t want any interruptions.”

Leaders get interrupted a lot. You need time to plan and reflect, but if your door is always closed and employees never come to update you, it’s probably because the message is clear: You are too busy to be bothered. The downside is you don’t find out what is going well or what needs your guidance.

The fix: Stop what you are doing, turn away from your computer and really listen to your people. When you need to complete an important task and don’t have time to listen, try saying, “I really want to be able to listen to this because it’s an important topic. Please come back in an hour so I can give it my complete attention.” That way, you will stay informed and still be able to complete the things you need a longer block of time to do.

7. “Failure is not an option.”

Leaders who adopt this philosophy instill fear and anxiety in their employees because mistakes are not allowed. No one can take risks or try anything new because they always have to play it safe. This is the best way for leaders to build a stagnant culture and a company that cannot compete in the marketplace. Failure is really a teaching tool to bring us to something greater.

The fix: Ensure your employees know mistakes aren’t fatal—the goal is to discover mistakes quickly, correct them and move forward. If you wait for flawless, you will never begin anything new. The real failure is fear of developing an idea until it’s perfect.
